Bronx Storm Was a Tornado
The ferocious windstorm that splintered trees and uprooted signs in the Bronx on Sunday afternoon turns out to have been a tornado. On Monday, the National Weather Service declared it an EF-1 tornado, with winds of 100 miles an hour.
Between 2:50 p.m. and 3 p.m. Sunday, the Weather Service said, the twister spun through six-tenths of a mile of northern Riverdale near the Hudson River, carving a path 100 yards wide and injuring seven people. Buildings damaged included the Hebrew Home for the Aged on Palisades Avenue.
The last time a tornado had touched down in the city was in 2007 in Sunset Park and Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. A tornado had last hit the Bronx in 1974.
