Overclock Pentium 4 DDR motherboards

It was only four months ago that we rounded up 18 Pentium 4 motherboards (see Labs, issue 88, p96), but the release of new chipsets has meant that a follow-up was in order. Of primary concern is Intel’s own DDR chipset, the 845D, of which we saw just one sample in our last round-up. Also new is VIA’s revision of the P4X266 – the cunningly named P4X266A – which brings support for UltraDMA/133 and, more importantly, enhanced performance.

Umicore-BrazeTec brazes Audi Q7

In future, Audi will place their trust in BrazeTec products for use in their new Q7 sports utility vehicle. There are major advantages to brazing individual exhaust system components in comparison to welding or clamping them. Specifically, the connections’ dynamic loadbearing capacity is greater and, compared to welded connections, it is possible to reduce wall thicknesses and minimize the likelihood of leaky connections. Moreover, even at the early
stage of making decisions on plant investment, costs can be lowered and space requirements minimized.

3D game engine design

Aimed at the working Visual C++ game developer, 3D Game Engine Design provides a tour of mathematical techniques for 3-D graphics, and the source code that's used to implement them in state-of-the-art video game engines. If you work in the game industry (or would like to), this book will serve you well, because it delivers excellent best practices for algorithms and programming techniques that'll help your software keep up with the competition.

This text is a virtual encyclopedia of expertise that's based on the author's own work and research in the gaming industry. It provides the mathematical notation, algorithms, and C++ code (on the accompanying CD-ROM) that are needed to build fast and maintainable game engines. Early sections start with the basics, with the math that's used to work with common 3-D objects (like spheres and boxes). Highlights include a high-powered review of quaternion algebra--in many cases, the preferred way to transform 3-D data.

The chapters on graphics pipelines explain the math that's behind representing and rendering a 3-D world in 2-D with intervening effects like lighting and texture mapping. A variety of current algorithms are provided for representing 3-D scenes, efficient picking (which allows a programmer to determine the object in a 3-D world that has been selected), and collision detection (in which objects collide virtually). In the game software of today, curves--and not individual triangles or polygons--often are used to represent 3-D objects. Algorithms that are used to turn curves into rendered surfaces are provided, too.

Later sections look at the current thinking about animation techniques for characters (including key frames, inverse kinematics, and skinning (in which digital skin is fitted over digital bone to create more realistic-looking movement)). How to represent terrain inside virtual worlds also is explained. The book closes with excellent material on such cutting-edge special effects as lens flare and projected shadows, which can add an extra level of realism to a video game. An appendix examines guidelines for designing object-oriented game software in C++.

From its many lessons, tips, and guidelines, readers will learn how to use the .NET Framework to program reusable, maintainable, and robust components.

Following in the footsteps of its best-selling predecessor, Programming .NET Components, Second Edition has been updated to cover .NET 2.0. It remains one of the few practical books available on this topic. This invaluable resource is targeted at anyone who develops complex or enterprise-level applications with the .NET platform--an ever-widening market. In fact, nearly two million Microsoft developers worldwide now work on such systems.

“The Social Network” Writer on Mark Zuckerberg: “I’ve Been That Guy”

The Social Network screenwriter Aaron Sorkin voiced “empathy” for Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s position as an accused idea thief — an accusation that plays a central role in the film about the young executive.

The film is based on a book called Accidental Billionaires, which among other things accounts a dispute between Zuckerberg and individuals who accused him of stealing their ideas when creating the social network.

Sorkin said in an interview with Time, “I’ve been that guy. I’ve been the Mark Zuckerberg in that situation, and I have absolute empathy for him.”

He referenced occasions when would-be screenwriters tried to claim that they’d come up with the idea for The West Wing, the TV series he ran for seven years, as the reasons for his empathy.

At one point in the film the Zuckerberg character says, “If you guys were the inventors of Facebook (Facebook), you would have invented Facebook.” Sorkin used that line as a sort of personal catharsis; “It’s what I always want to say to these people,” he said.

The Social Network: Fact or Fiction?

Facebook’s founders are reportedly not very thrilled with the angle of either Accidental Billionares or The Social Network, and have challenged some of the facts in the story they tell, so it’s interesting that Sorkin claims to empathize with Zuckeberg.

As is the case with most film versions of true stories, the facts aren’t all straight. Since the film is a work of art and not a documentary, that old Pablo Picasso quote might apply: “Art is the lie that tells the truth.” And Sorkin’s first objective is obviously to entertain. Sorkin explained his approach thusly:

“There were a number of different versions of the truth coming from three or four or five people. And rather than pick one and dramatize that, I wanted to dramatize the fact that there are three or four or five different versions of the truth. Everybody has their own version, and everybody is right, and everybody is wrong.”

Even if you can’t catch the pre-release screenings in New York or San Francisco, you’ll be able to make your own judgments about Sorkin’s screenplay when the movie hits theaters around the U.S. on October 1.

Mark Zuckerberg Founder Facebook

Mark Zuckerberg is the founder and CEO of Facebook, which he started in his college dorm room in 2004 with roomates Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes.

Zuckerberg is responsible for setting the overall direction and product strategy for Facebook. He leads the design of Facebook’s service and development of its core technology and infrastructure.

Earlier in life, Zuckerberg developed a music recommendation system called Synapse and a peer-to-peer client called Wirehog. However, he abandoned both to pursue new projects.

Zuckerberg attended Harvard University and studied computer science before founding Facebook.

While at Harvard, Zuckerberg created Facemash, a website that compared students’ dorm photos side-by-side in a fashion similar to HOT or NOT. Harvard administration was not amused, and Zuckerberg faced subsequent disciplinary action. Less than three months later, he launched Facebook.

Zuckerberg won the 2007 Crunchie Award for ‘Best Startup CEO.’

Mark Zuckerberg on Wikipedia

Mark Elliot Zuckerberg (born May 14, 1984) is an American entrepreneur who co-founded the social networking site Facebook. Zuckerberg co-founded Facebook with fellow classmates Dustin Moskovitz, Eduardo Saverin, and Chris Hughes while attending Harvard. He is a billionaire due to his 24% share of Facebook.

Zuckerberg was born in White Plains, New York and raised in Dobbs Ferry, New York. Zuckerberg's parents are Jewish, but he considers himself an atheist. He started programming when he was in middle school. Early on, Zuckerberg enjoyed developing computer programs, especially communication tools and games. Before attending Phillips Exeter Academy beginning in his junior year of high school, he went to school at Ardsley High School.

He transferred to Phillips Exeter Academy where he immersed himself in Latin. He also built a program to help the workers in his father's office communicate; he built a version of the game Risk, and under the company name Intelligent Media Group, he built a music player named the Synapse Media Player that used artificial intelligence to learn the user's listening habits, which was posted to Slashdot and received a rating of 3 out of 5 from PC Magazine. Microsoft and AOL tried to purchase Synapse and recruit Zuckerberg, but he decided to attend Harvard College instead, which he attended in September 2002, and where he joined Alpha Epsilon Pi, a Jewish fraternity. In college, he was known for reciting lines from epic poems such as The Iliad.

Ebook Credit Constraints and the Yield Curve

Incomplete markets are a potential explanation for the failure of standard asset pricing models based on complete markets (Heaton and Lucas, 1995). When markets are incomplete, agents need to self-insure against uninsurable risks and therefore buy securities in addition to the standard smoothing motives. Uninsurable idiosyncratic risks do not affect uniformly assets with different risks or maturities. In particular, incomplete market models have been used to analyze the yield curve as a simple departure from the standard Cox, Ingersoll, and Ross (1986) complete market model. But due to the heterogeneous agents structure, only few analytical results have been proposed in such frameworks. Seppala (2000) studies an endowment economy with credit constraints and relies heavily on simulations. Heaton and Lucas (1992) who study a three period economy follow another approach.

In this paper, we present a model with a production economy and heterogeneous agents, incomplete markets and credit constraints. In this economy, agents face both an uninsurable employment risk (they switch between an employed and an unemployed status on the labor market) and an aggregate risk, which affect their wages when they are employed. We are able to derive analytical solutions for the zero-coupon bond prices, whatever the maturity, and to investigate the effect of the idiosyncratic risk on the level and the slope of the yield curve. These solutions allow us to exhibit new effects, which have not been put forward in the literature yet. In particular, we show that the volume of titles affect the level and the slope of the yield curve because of credit constraints.

We obtain analytical solutions because we make two assumptions used in the Bewley-Hugget types of models with incomplete markets, which have not been used together yet. These assumptions are useful to decrease the heterogeneity between agents. The first one is that the labor supply is infinitely elastic. Sheinkman and Weiss (1986) make this assumption in a monetary economy. They obtain that all agents for which the credit constraint does not bind, hold the same quantity of titles. The second is made by Kehoe, Levine and Woodford (1991). In their model, agents with low income are credit constrained and sell all their titles. As a consequence, they do not decumulate progressively their assets to smooth consumption. With these two assumptions, we can reduce the heterogeneity of agents to only four different types. This insures tractability and analytical solutions, even when there are an arbitrarily large number of titles of different maturities, which are not perfect substitutes. The contribution of this paper is thus the derivation of this reduced heterogeneous equilibrium and its application to the yield curve.

Ebook Credit Market Shocks, Monetary Policy, and Economic Fluctuations

The current financial crisis and the contemporaneous contractions in output, investment, and employment indicate that credit markets disruptions have important effects on economic activity. Central banks round the world have responded with aggressive reductions in their interest rates what suggests that monetary authorities believe that they can partially offset these negative credit market shocks. In this paper I explore the importance of credit market shocks for economic fluctuations and I asses if monetary policy could stabilize shocks that originate in credit markets. To provide quantitative answers for the U.S. economy I use Bayesian maximum likelihood methods to estimate an extended version of the Bernanke, Gertler, Gilchrist (1999) (henceforth BGG) financial accelerator model using real and financial data.

Gilchrist, Yankov, and Zakrajmsek (2008) show that corporate bond spreads have significant predictive power for economic activity, which suggests important linkages between financial conditions and macroeconomic outcomes. In order to quantify these linkages a structural macroeconomic model that distinguishes between changes in credit supply and demand and that can account for general equilibrium feedback effects between developments in the financial and real sectors of the economy is required. Recent work by Elekdag, Justiniano, and Tchakarov (2006), Tovar (2006), Christiano, Motto, and Rostagno (2007), Christensen and Dib (2008), De Graeve (2008), and Queijo von Heideken (2008) seeks to quantify these mechanisms by estimating dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) models that incorporate credit market imperfections through the financial accelerator mechanism described in Carlstrom and Fuerst (1997) and BGG.

Although details differ in terms of model estimation and shocks specification, all of these papers document an important role for financial factors in business cycles fluctuations. Queijo von Heideken (2008) for example, shows that the ability of a model with a rich array of real and nominal rigidities to fit both U.S. and the Euro area data improves significantly if one allows for the presence of a financial accelerator mechanism; and Christiano, Motto, and Rostagno (2007) demonstrate that shocks to the financial sector have played and important role in economic fluctuations over the past two decades, both in the United States and Europe. Queijo von Heideken (2008), however, estimate a structural model that is identified without reliance on financial data and that does not allow for shocks to the financial sector, whereas Christiano, Motto, and Rostagno (2007), though allowing for a wide variety of shocks to the financial sector, do not estimate the parameters governing the strength of the financial accelerator mechanism. To date, we are aware of no empirical work that seeks to estimate simultaneously the key parameters of the financial accelerator mechanism along with the shocks to the financial sector using financial market data. The present work fills this gap.

Ebook Market microstructure and market liquidity

In this paper we review the factors which affect market liquidity and present a framework which measures such effects quantitatively. This framework enables us to clarify the logic behind recent market reforms and the introduction of rules (e.g. the introduction of electronic trading, the development of disclosure of trade information for market participants, and the prevalence of computerised bilateral transactions). Market liquidity has long been implicitly assumed to exist when market participants evaluate the prices of financial products and manage their portfolios and when central banks implement monetary policy. Since the cost of losing market liquidity is large despite its implicit nature, the improvement and stability of market liquidity is not only important for market participants, but also serves as a way to enhance financial market stability.

This paper is composed of two major parts: a survey of the concepts relating to the factors which affect market liquidity and verification by simulation. In the conceptual summary part, we first summarise the definition of market liquidity and the relationship between market liquidity and market efficiency or stability. Based on the summary, we consider the price discovery mechanism, in which potential trade needs are actually realised in the market as order flows and prices are discovered by matching such orders, and we clarify our direction toward simulation model construction. In the simulation, we assume a certain market structure and focus on the parameters which affect an individual market participant’s ordering decision, such as expectation of the asset price, confidence in such expectation, the extent of risk aversion, sensitivity to various kinds of market information. These parameters determine the realisation process of potential trade needs of market participants according to the market structure.

Therefore, through the simulation we observe, as a mechanism in which market structure affects the state of market liquidity, how the above parameters affect market behaviour. Recently, simulation techniques have been widely used in the area of economics, and are useful in analysing an economic mechanism, which is an aggregate of complex individual behaviours. In our analysis, we do not deal with actual markets which trade specific goods such as foreign exchange, stocks, or government bonds, but assume a market in which hypothetical assets or securities are traded. Although some studies have dealt with the foreign exchange market or analyses of government bond markets, many studies have focused mainly on the New York Stock Exchange. In our analysis, instead of recognising the difference between markets by the character of the goods traded, we regard the difference as a difference of market microstructure or trading rules, and try to capture their general effects on market liquidity.

Ebook Catastrophe Bonds and Reinsurance: The Competitive Effect of Information-Insensitive Triggers

Catastrophic events, such as hurricanes and earthquakes are one of the main risks that insurers and reinsurers face. These hazards can result in huge losses and financing problems. For a long time reinsurance contracts have been the only way to hedge against these losses. However, since the early 1990s, new risk transfer instruments have emerged as an alternative to traditional reinsurance contracts. The emergence of the new instruments came along with the availability of new triggers that determine the contract’s payoff. Traditional reinsurance contracts’ payoffs are based on the policyholder’s realized loss (indemnity payment or indemnity trigger). As an alternative, new risk transfer instruments have evolved where the payoff is often based on index or parametric triggers. A prominent example for such contracts are catastrophe (cat) bonds.

One of the characteristics of index triggers is that the contract’s payoff is largely, and in the case of a parametric trigger, completely, independent of the insurer’s realized loss. For that reason, a main advantage of index or parametric triggers is their positive effect on moral hazard (e.g., Niehaus and Mann, 1992, and Doherty, 1997). We provide a new argument in favor of such triggers: information insensitive triggers help to overcome the potential problems of adverse selection in the reinsurance market due to asymmetric information between reinsurers about an insurer’s risk.

Asymmetric information in the reinsurance market. Reinsurers typically have a close and long-term relation to their insurers. In the course of the business relation, reinsurers acquire information that helps to assess the insurer’s risk and to price non-proportional reinsurance policies. For example, they obtain inside information about an insurer’s business model, underwriting and reserving policy, book of business, internal decision processes, ability to screen policies (applicants) and efficiency in claims settlement. A large part of this information is “soft” and cannot easily and credibly be conveyed to third parties.

Ebook Transparency, Ownership, and Financing Constraints in Private Firms

An intended purpose of financial accounting information is to reduce information asymmetry by allowing external providers of capital to better assess the firm’s investment opportunities and monitor managerial actions (e.g., Fama and Jensen 1983; Diamond and Verrecchia 1991; Bushman and Smith 2001; Healy and Palepu 2001; Beatty, Liao, and Weber 2008). In other words, financial accounting transparency should ease financing constraints by reducing the adverse selection or moral hazard costs associated with information asymmetry. However, in certain settings, financial accounting may serve a limited role in reducing information costs.

This could occur for a variety of reasons, such as alternative sources of information being available, weak institutional features protecting external providers of capital, close relations between managers and external providers of financing, and lower-quality financial information. We examine the association between the firm’s financial reporting transparency (i.e., firms that subject their financial statements to an external audit) and financing constraints (i.e., more difficult access to external financing and higher financing cost), as well as the mediating role of ownership concentration, for an extensive sample of private firms from 68 countries.

Private firms make up the vast majority of economic activity around the world, yet they have received very limited attention in academic research. Thus, examining the role of accounting information for private firms is economically important in its own right. An interesting feature of a sample of private firms is that these firms have a limited information environment compared with the relatively richer disclosure environment of public firms (e.g., Burgstahler, Hail, and Leuz 2006).

Ebook Credit Constraints and Investment Behavior in Mexico’s Rural Economy

Are rural economic agents credit constrained? This question is of interest not only to researchers but also to public officials whose policies influence the availability of funds in rural loan markets. Without access to external finance, entrepreneurs and enterprises cannot realize their full growth potential, resulting in slower economic growth for a country as a whole. Inability to obtain sufficient funds, or, in other words, credit constraints, is often cited as one of the main factors limiting firms’ operations and growth, especially so in countries with weak financial markets and institutions. In the case of Mexico, Chapter 2 shows that individual entrepreneurs and enterprises mention lack of credit as a constraint to their operations. The data from the World Business Environment Survey (WBES) illustrate the issue of access to financial services from the enterprise’ perspective. Such data show that Mexican firms rate financing as more of an operational and growth constraint than for their counterparts in other Latin American countries. Moreover, they rate access to long-term loans, access to export finance, paperwork, and corruption of bank officials as greater obstacles than for enterprises in the Latin American region.

In the economic literature credit constraints (or credit rationing) are defined as a situation in which interest rates do not fully adjust to equalize the demand and supply of loans. Some borrowers are denied credit even though they are willing to pay market interest rates (or more), whereas apparently similar borrowers are able to obtain credit (Jaffee and Stiglitz, 1981). The borrowers who are denied credit (either fully or partially) are referred to as credit constrained. Thus, credit constraints arise as a response to asymmetric information problems that characterize loan contracts. On one side, the willingness of the borrower to accept higher interest rate signals their higher risk (and therefore higher probability of default), which leads to lender’s unwillingness to lend to these customers because of the perceived adverse selection effect.

On the other side, obtaining a higher interest loan may decrease repayment incentives of the borrower and may induce them to take up riskier projects (the moral hazard effect). Both of these situations result in a case of credit constraint (that is, when interest rates do not adjust and there is an excess demand for loans). To solve the asymmetric information problem, lenders resort to different mechanisms to screen, monitor, and enforce credit contracts, such as collateral requirements, gathering of information, or monitoring activities. Less developed countries with poor financial sector infrastructure (such as poor credit information registries, poor collateral laws, and so forth) may see a stronger incidence of credit constraints.

Ebook Credit Constraints, Heterogeneous Firms, and International Trade

Three stylized facts describe fundamental features of international trade patterns: First, while most countries export to at least one destination in each sector, they export to only a quarter of all potential trade partners in an average sector. Second, there is significant variation in export volumes and the range of products exported across country pairs and sectors. Finally, there is substantial turnover in the product composition of exports over time. More than a quarter of all bilaterally exported products are discontinued from one year to the next and replaced by new ones, resulting in the reallocation of 16% of bilateral trade by value.

This paper provides evidence that credit constraints are an important determinant of global trade patterns and a crucial element in the explanation of all three stylized facts. I develop a multi sector model with credit constrained heterogeneous firms, countries at different levels of financial development, and sectors of varying financial vulnerability. This model delivers rich empirical predictions for export patterns which find strong support in the data.

In the model credit constraints affect firms in different countries and sectors differentially. In particular, for technological reasons, firms in some sectors need to finance a greater share of their export costs externally. In addition, sectors differ in their endowment of tangible assets that can serve as collateral. Thus, entrepreneurs find it easier to start exporting in some sectors because they need to raise less outside finance or because potential investors expect a higher return in case of default. Similarly, credit constraints vary across countries because contracts between firms and investors are more likely to be enforced at higher levels of financial development. If the financial contract is enforced, the firm makes a payment to the investor; otherwise the firm defaults and the creditor claims the collateral. Firms therefore find it easier to obtain external finance in countries with high levels of financial contractibility.

In the absence of credit constraints, all firms with productivity above a certain cut off level become exporters as in Melitz (2003). Credit constraints, however, interact with firm heterogeneity and reinforce the selection of only the most productive firms into exporting: Because more productive firms raise higher revenues, they can offer creditors a greater return in case of repayment and are hence more likely to secure the outside capital necessary for exporting. The model thus predicts that the productivity cut$off for exporting varies systematically across countries and sectors. It is higher in financially vulnerable industries which require a lot of outside finance or have few collateralizable assets, and is lower in countries with high levels of financial contractibility. Importantly, the effect of financial development is more pronounced in financially vulnerable sectors.

Embedding credit constraints in this heterogeneous firms model delivers rich empirical predictions. Countries are more likely to export to any given trade partner in a financially vulnerable sector if they are more financially developed. The model can thus account for the many instances of zero bilateral export flows, the many asymmetric cases of country pairs with positive exports in only one direction, and the systematic variation in these patterns across countries and sectors. Given positive exports, the model also predicts that in financially vulnerable sectors more firms become exporters and export greater volumes when located in more financially developed countries. It follows that financially developed countries export a wider variety of products and relatively higher volumes in financially vulnerable sectors.
