New York Under Tornado Watch; 6 pm EST - Updated 8:45 pm EST

The National Weather Service has issued a rare tornado watch for all five boroughs of New York City, Fairfax County (Connecticut), New Jersey, Rockland, Westchester and Putnam, New York. The watch was issued from 6 pm EST to 1 am EST.

Sullivan County, New York is under a tornado warning –a stronger alert meaning a tornado has been sighted. Oppressive heat and humidity can be expected for these areas through the weekend. This warning is a rarity. The news has updated to include a “supercell” in New Jersey.

People are advised to stay near a radio or TV for weather updates. Do not call the National Weather Service – as they are jammed with calls and cannot get the news of updates via phone. Make sure you have plenty of batteries, flashlights, candles, water and food storage in case of temporary power seizures. This news was reported at 8:08 EST.
