With its first redesign in thirteen years, the new Corvette uses many “shared” GM parts, and several new structures (see above Figure) . Drivetrain Tunnel The backbone of the Corvette structure is the stamped steel drivetrain tunnel. The tunnel is closed at the bottom with a bolted- on steel panel, which adds rigidity and strength. No repairs have been established for this structure. Crossmembers The front and rear crossmembers are made from cast aluminum and are bolted to the hydroformed rails. The front member also serves as a mounting bracket for the rack-and- pinion steering gear. The crossmembers and aluminum control arms are not repairable, and must be replaced if damaged. Bumper Beams The front and rear UHSS impact beams are MIG welded to the mild steel frame rails. Both beams are repairable as long as no kinks, tears, or cracks are present. Cold straightening is the only recommended repair method for these UHSS bumper beams. This is a first for any OEM platform. To replace the bumper beams, the repair manual recommends cutting the welds around the perimeter of the rail ends, favoring the beam side of the weld joint, to avoid cutting into the frame rails. Pieces of the damaged beam are extracted from the the rail ends, retaining as much of the original shape of the frame rail as possible (see top of Figure 4). In the areas to be MIG welded, primer is removed with a DA sander and an 80-grit disc. Technicians are warned against using a grinder. Weld-through primer is recommended, and the beam is stitch welded using the original weld locations as a guide. The repair manual also includes a welding template (see bottom of Figure 4).
